Ghetto-kavely-by-Outi-Korhonen

A course starting in May 2014 will collaboratively create a walking performance combining different art forms. It is based on participants´ experiences in urban space. The work will be presented in September for international artists from The City Ghettos of Today project with whom it is possible to continue artistic work in the fields of drama, video and sound. The course is given by Eveliina Heinonen, drama instructor of the National Theatre’s audience work and Walter Fondo, performance group director of Pacunet. The course is part of the Citizen’s Forum´s programme called Art and Community as a power of change.

The Helsinki-themed, site-specific poetry by the poets from the multilingual Sivuvalo project places the experiences of writers from all over the world onto a map of the city. The writers are Roxana Crisólogo (Peru), Yousif Abu Al-Fawz (Iraq), Polina Kopylova (Russia) and Daniel Malpica (Mexico). The poems will be accompanied by improvised music from cellist Sergio Castrillón (Colombia). The panel discussion will be hosted by the Regional Artist on Cultural Diversity, Outi Korhonen. The Nightingale City event and the accompanying digital poetry map are produced in cooperation with the European project, City Ghettos Today as part of the Runokuu poetry festival

The evening ends with a performance by Finnphonia Emigrantica, where the essence of Finnish-ness will be explored. What happens when an immigrant performs a contemporary poem about Finland in his mother tongue? The night will, indeed, see many poems about Finland written by domestic poets – but the languages they will be recited in are Hungarian, French, Danish, Swedish, English, Swahili, Luganda, Romanian and Russian along with Finnish. The event will be subtitled in Finnish. Performing are: Romulus ChiciucMad IceOlga Shiskin and Sara Soulié. Directed by David Kozma.

NEWS PARIS

From 10 to 22 March, The City Ghettos of Today’s international artistic team will be in residence at Paris’s Musée de l’histoire de l’immigration (Museum of Immigration History) in order to create and present the first phase of their ambulatory performance-installations.  This inaugural event will explore the phenomenon of ghettoization in two neighbourhoods located in France’s Ile-de-France region: the Goutte d’Or in Paris and the Quartier du Parc in Nanterre. Coordinated by the Paris-based company Check Points, this double exploration will showcase the collaborative work of locally based artistic researchers who were brought together prior to the European team’s artistic residency with the help of cie Check Point’s local partners (Université Paris 8, the association Atouts cours, Les Equipes de Développement Local based in both the 18th arrondissement and in Nanterre). During the collective outing of the project meeting in Paris on 22nd of March, participants will have the opportunity to view the in-progress installation, attend the performance, participate in a roundtable discussion and enjoy a convivial meal together with the artistic team.
